It's about 3 months ago I got used to deal with my undergraudate thesis "never ending" revision, not later after that now I suddenly have to deal with the job seeker preparation.
Yup, that's sound tiring but that's what I really feel now. I realize that being a students isn't easy because not only we have to finish our study and write our undergraduate thesis, but we also have to prepare to go out of the comfort zone and entering the career world.
Unfortunately, most of the lessons in campuss didn't teach its students how to prepare for seeking job. What I remember is just about reading theory and learn something that is far from reality. Truthfully, students need to learn the tips how to prepare well for entering the career world.
Well now, after times of sending job applications to many companies I examine and gain more knowledge about the importance of good prepartion for entering career world. To prepare ourselves for applying a job we need some requirements and the most important requirements is we need a comprehensive and good CV. Nevertheless, we also need some other requirements like our academic transcript, certificate (or if it's not published yet you can replace it temporary with letter of graduation), and other certificate of achievements, courses, and everything that indicate your achievements.
To be more comfortable, I wil explain those requirements one by one here:
1. CV
You may have heard this world several times but still many jobseeker cannot prepare the good CV. CV comes from latin word "Curriculum" and "Vitae" that means your life comprehensive history.
In USA, even there are a CV maker consultant that gives advice to the making of job seekers CV. Employeer in USA really put attention to the aplicants CV because the more comprehensive and professional the CV the more better the person is.
CV in some cases is a little bit same like Resume but Resume is more detail and CV sometimes comes in the resume as a segment that list our general informations. But not many companies requires CV and resume together. You have to make sure that you make CV or Resume comprehensively.
I read in one article that for fresh graduate we don't have to make our CV more than 2 pages long. I myself, have make that mistakes. As I want to make my CV detailed and professional, I make it 5 pages long, and I got no interview call. But when I summed my CV into 2 pages, I got more interview call.
There are many articles in the internet and books about what to be list in our CV and the essential of that informations is we need this information to be listed in our CV:
a. Our general information, like: our name, birthdate, status (single/married), etc.
b. Our formal education history, you must list from elementary school until university and stated also the year of entrance and graduation.
c. Our informal education history, like our courses we attend, seminar, workshop, coaching, etc.
d. Our skill, like computer skill or language skill
e. Our achievement,
f. other miscellanous informations but still list that is relevant.
According to my knowlege, the strength of our CV comes from our skill and achivement. If we are a fresh graduate but we have many achievements and experiences in school organisations and comitees, it will add a good score for us.
So, if you are still in the college it is good to enhance your qualifications like attending courses, not just english course. Increasing skill especially computer skill, like Adobe photoshop, etc. And make more achievement, join competition in your campuss.
I evaluate my self that in the future I have to enhance my CV or my qualification by:
- Attending other language courses (Oh, I really want to learn Japanese and Arabics :D)
- Take IELTS test because it will be more improtant in the future than TOEFL
- Attending accountancy courses even I am not entering economics faculty I need this course and I know a place that offer an accountancy course conducted by IKAPI and the place is near Depok.
- Attending computer courses, I need to master SPSS because many companies need people who can do statistic. As a social students I have to be strong in both quantitative and qualitative research.
- Take workshop, seminar, and achivements. Wish me luck
2. Other supporting requirements
Like your academic transcript and certificate, make sure you prepare it before you apply a job
So, that is about the job requirements. I want to tell also about the channel to search a job, type of the employeer, and about interview.
But this post is quite longer so I will continue it to other post. Keep reading. Good luck for you!
